X10 ads still popping
Thursday, July 5th, 2001Last week I posted
this URL you can click on to turn off X10 pop-under ads for three years (it says 30 days, but look at the URL and you’ll see you’re set for 1,095 days instead). It got picked up by NPR talk show host Todd Mundt, among others. But it turns out that after setting the X10 opt-out cookie, you still get the ads. In fact, they get even more annoying: The ad windows pop up and then close themselves a fraction of a second later (you can see the Javascript for this at http://images.x10.com/scripts/optout.js). I just thought my browser had gone buggy until I figured it out.
What to do? Windows users can install Popup Killer. For the Mac, the iCab browser lets you prevent specific Web sites from opening windows.
My
search engine optimization article on Webmonkey should be updated in about a week, with hands-on tech details from a day at Google, and some great ideas from readers.
