Why Winer is a Winner
Thursday, October 18th, 2001Dave asked me to explain why I nominated him for Tech Renegade in this year’s Wired Rave Awards. It’s simple: Dave stuck his neck out to work both with Microsoft and against them. He leveraged their ubiquity and power to promote a technology designed for developers everywhere rather than just those in Redmond. And he’s been successful enough that three very smart people I listen to for ideas gushed to me separately about SOAP in the past year as This Thing You Really Ought To Be Looking At.
I’d never actually met Dave in person until Seybold a few weeks ago, but he turns out to be just the kind of outgoing, opinionated person I enjoy being around. And standing next to him at crowded cocktail parties has its perks: With his height advantage, Dave can spot the roving hors d’oeuvres bearers and wave them over to feed an entire cluster of bloggers. The notable blogger-clustering was funny to watch last night, especially when the Google people joined us - you could see them mentally making link maps :-).
