in search of the Taliban’s ISP
Patrick Di Justo went following the trail of the Taliban website, originally for a story I was working on. He talked directly to ISP operators in Afghanistan, and learned that the recently shut down Taliban site had been set up by the same company in Pakistan who accidentally propagated the Brain virus on PC’s in the late 80’s, a story Patrick had written about back then. And he got the geek goods on exactly how bits get to and from Afghanistan - or used to - via Singapore. Remember SEA-ME-WE?
While working on the story, Patrick joked to me that there’s probably no surer way to open an FBI file on yourself right now than dialing country codes 92 and 93 from the Bronx.
