Ahoy from Burning Man

Wednesday, August 28th, 2002

I think this is the year that blogging from Black Rock City becomes a cliche. But here we are, working the afternoon shift at Media Mecca and testing the fat Wi-Fi link courtesy of Oregon Country Fair Embassy. I see at least one “linksys” and one "default” nearby as well.

A wireless high five goes to Christopher Lee at Apple Customer Service in Austin for overnighting my copy of Jaguar so I could update my blueberry iBook just before heading out here last week. I promised Christopher I’d report on how Jaguar performs out here.

In short, Jaguar seems to be no more or less resistant to dust, wind, and 110-degree temperatures than MacOS 10.1, but it does start Classic mode much faster. That’s important when you’re toting an old-style 300MHz clamshell iBook (they have the best Wi-Fi range and drop-proof design for out here). Jaguar seems more solid and well-rounded, e.g. with the return of spring-loaded folders. And the spam filter alone was worth $129 in the battery time it’s saved me already.

Today is my second wedding anniversary with Christina, “on their way to forever together” as Paul Harvey used to say.
