Slate has my hands-on test drive with lots of help from Cliff Skolnick. I hope you’ll find it a welcome alternative to the press release rewrites other publications have been posting today (glad to see the Boston Phoenix’s Dan Kennedy appreciated the effort and posted his own test drive). Karen Lillington has blogged her own hands-on comments, too. It’s funny: I realize the store’s pricing is a huge shift because I’ve talked to music execs and read Jim Griffin’s pho mailing list. Karen noticed it as a customer, which is what matters more.

US moves beyond mere super power

The American military is now the strongest the world has ever known, both in absolute terms and relative to other nations; stronger than the Wehrmacht in 1940, stronger than the legions at the height of Roman power. For years to come, no other nation is likely even to try to rival American might.

Last year American military spending exceeded that of all other NATO states, Russia, China, Japan, Iraq and North Korea combined … no other government can afford to try to catch up.

And the kicker: No other military currently has the real-world experience of the United States.
