Let the Net catalogue itself
Thursday, October 16th, 2003Dave Winer’s idea for 21st Century Web directories is one I wish I’d thought of myself. Cataloging the Web manually is so 1995. It’s time to automate the process. Dave’s idea: Create a spec that lets anyone, anywhere create categories, subcategories, and listings and post them online. These can link to one another. Crawl ‘em and run a Google-style popularity algorithm over them to cobble together a People’s Choice directory that’s constantly updated. Stale or weak entries fall out over time. It’s how search engines sort Web pages, so why not do the same for directories too?
