Note to aspiring writers: Don't do this

It's generally not a good idea to use "Orwellian" in the first sentence of an essay about something other than Orwell, at least not until after you get a gig at the Times. Remember that Paul Krugman landed his spot at the NYT by writing about economics at first - think "leading indicators" rather than "Big Brother." Even the gang at Salon have only used the term about 200 times in nine years - that's once every 2-3 weeks max. And they're trained professionals.

Also to be avoided: That Ben Franklin quote about trading liberty for security.

While you're still reading Slate

Christopher Hitchens picks his Democratic ticket - and more to the point, picks apart the Democratic voter.

I'm writing a piece on politics for Slate right now (honest, Julia, any minute now!) that should run this week. Blogging will be light, as they say.

The crowded erupted in a frenzy that recalled a Howard Dean audience circa August 2003. Which, if you think about it, is pretty much where Gore still is.
