War: Still stupid

Sunday, September 12th, 2004

Arab News posted the above screenshots of TV reporter Mazen Al-Tomaizi being hit in a US helicopter attack yesterday. He died shortly afterwards. As did lots of other people, some of them reportedly children. One report I read said Mazen got in a final cellphone call: “They shot us.”

PC Mag quiz: Word vs Selectric

Can you spot the difference? Look at the quote marks around “Selectric.” From what I know, Word uses curly quotes, Selectric has straight ones. That makes it Word on the left, Selectric on the right. I emailed the author to ask for higher-resolution images.

UPDATE: Edward says his source was the scanned manual here. The example still looks different to me, but it could be artifacts of the scan, since Page 19 shows how to do the curly quotes on the keyboard.

Why do microwave ovens have to beep?

Sunday, September 12th, 2004

A reporter friend and I were wondering why you can’t turn the beep on a microwave oven down, or off, so as not to bother sleeping housemates (or yourself). I’ve never seen one with an adjustable beep. Anyone know why? Is there a regulation, or is it just … Tradition! It’s one of those little things that’s nagged at me for years; I may finally put in a few calls on it this week.

UPDATE: Readers own models by GE and Samsung that can be silenced.

Home and flood insurance for Florida residents

Sunday, September 12th, 2004

A quick summary of my CNN spot with Collins Spencer this morning: If you’re in the path of the hurricanes but don’t have flood insurance, go to Google and search for “flood insurance“. But don’t read the search results; look at the ads in the right hand column instead. You’ll find some reliable resources to get quotes and applications without wasting hours on the phone, or days waiting for brochures in the mail.

  • FloodSmart.gov - helpful info from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP, an acronym you’ll see often)
  • NetQuote - fill in a detailed form about your home to get insurance quotes. Some appear onscreen, some come later by email.
  • Insure.com - onscreen quotes for rental insurance. (No realtime quotes for home or condo owners in Florida, unfortunately)
  • iii.org - the Insurance Information Institute, with links to home and business insurance, plus a list of hotlines insurers have set up for claims related to hurricane Frances (and soon Ivan)
  • AAASouth.com - We didn’t mention this one, but AAA offers flood insurance to members. You can get a quote and find claims forms on the site.

CBS’ onscreen evidence

Sunday, September 12th, 2004

Brian Carnell caught the above screen grab from CBS last week, during which Dan Rather claimed, “Other Bush military records already officially released by the White House itself show the same superscript.” Do they look the same to you?

To spell it out: The new document sports a true superscript, above the normal area of text. The old one has its “th” typed in line with the rest of the letters, which would be much easier mechanically - no need to move any hardware up or down.

Then again, I don’t think CBS was trying to snow viewers here. I think that, as Joshua Marshall did earlier this week, they looked at it skeptically but just didn’t see the difference.
