I tested five desktop search tools for Slate. If your favorite (X1, Blinkx, Lookout, etc) isn’t in there, it’s because we focused on those that are (a) free and (b) being mass-marketed by the big Web portals - AOL, Google, HotBot, Ask Jeeves, and MSN. Yahoo’s X1-powered app isn’t available yet.
