Married to The Man

Tie-Dye and Camo Don’t Mix, a first-person essay by a Berkeley war protester married to an Oakland cop and Army reservist.

ME: Wow, it’s been five years since they killed Rosebud. It seems like just yesterday.

HIM: Who’s Rosebud?

ME: The political activist shot by the Berkeley campus police. I remember when it happened. I was in policy school.

HIM: Are you talking about the gal with the machete in the chancellor’s house?

ME: She had a machete?

HIM: It wasn’t the Berkeley police, it was Oakland.

ME: No, I’m pretty sure it was campus police.

HIM: No, I know. Because it was my buddy who did it.
