Scrutizined for your protection

The Washington Post reports on the ubiquitous reaction to AOL’s leaked customer search records: Gosh, that’s a terrible invasion of those people’s personal lives—let me see!

“My first reaction was horror at the privacy implications,” he said. “And then I got excited about all the fun things we could learn from the data.”

I’m listed, correctly, among the guilty parties. But my favorite line is this one:

Even privacy advocates who were outraged by the breach have analyzed the search strings, mainly so they can provide evidence to back up their claims about how invasive the data are.

I sent that to Nick Douglas, who typed back, “Hypocrisy is what separates us from the animals.”
