The wry little website they said would be gone by 1997 ties with USA Today, Vogue and CNN for its share of Gawker’s Great Moments in Journalism awards. I’m still trying to land one of those for the mantlepiece.

Gidget - er, Wired grows up

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Wow. I was crab-walking through the annual Thanksgiving morning crowd at San Francisco’s Marina Safeway (visualize 1,500 Range Rover drivers who forgot to get cranberries) when I looked up and spotted the magazine rack a few yards away. One cover stood out from the rest - eye-catching, glamorous, classy yet quietly sexy. I was trying to place the cover model’s face when I realized it wasn’t Vanity Fair, it was Wired. The best part was that other people I’m sure didn’t recognize lonelygirl15 on the cover were picking it up. I kicked myself for not even trying to get something into the issue.

I’ve got a meeting Monday to talk to Wired’s longest-tenured editor about doing something for an upcoming package. I hope the cover’s this coldly smoking hot.
