Tesla test drive

The Tesla road test is already Slate’s most emailed article today. Besides my drooling report and the math-defying torque curve plot, we link to new info about the company’s 2009 model, an affordable (for Silicon Valley product managers) 5-passenger sedan that will probably outperform a BMW 5-series in traffic.

Good question from Dave Spiegel at Columbia:

An idea I heard about long ago that doesn’t seem much talked about
anymore is to have battery stations (the analog of gas stations),
where motorists who are low on charge can pull in and replace their
car’s battery with a battery that has a fresh charge. Seems like a
great idea. I think that the idea of having to plug in your car
every night is discouraging to would-be electric car owners.

Any idea why no one mentions this idea anymore?
